The healthcare system is becoming increasingly complex and difficult to navigate. The Department of Labor has projected that the demand for Community Health Workers to grow 13% by 2024- nearly double the national average of 7% for all occupations (


The Nathan M. Bisk Center for Professional Studies (NMBCPS) Patient Navigator Advanced Training Program at Jacksonville University is designed to offer the opportunity to complete an online, 4 course, 12 week advanced training modular program. This advanced training program can enhance the skillset of healthcare workers and permits people without a medical background to earn additional income. Courses are 6 weeks in length, with 2 courses each semester. These courses prepare the navigator to assist patients in the home or in the hospital setting with transportation, and/or errands to obtain supplies, medication or equipment. Patient navigators are also prepared to assist with communication and collaboration among family and healthcare providers. Tuition is estimated at $2,000.00.

Admission Requirements

Admission is open to qualified persons of any race, color, religion, and national or ethnic origin. Patient Navigator admission is processed through the Nathan M. Bisk Center for Professional Studies. To be considered for admission, potential students must submit the following items:

  • Completed Online Application
  • Graduated from a regionally accredited high school or GED
  • Official Transcripts from all high schools, colleges, or universities attended
  • Professional Resume

Course Requirements

Successful completion of all four courses will result in a certificate of completion as approved by the Nathan M. Bisk Center for Professional Studies Program Director.

Patient Navigator Course Series


  • Patient Navigator Role
    Introduces the scope of practice for the Patient Navigator.  Emphasis is placed on communication, documentation, health literacy, health information, and healthcare services.  Patient navigator responsibilities related to patient rights and quality and safety of care are discussed within the framework of the patient navigator role.
  • Medical Terminology and Healthcare Essentials
    This course uses a systems approach to present the concepts of medical terminology. Students have an opportunity to apply these concepts in a simulated medical terminology language laboratory. Red Flag basic assessment findings and appropriate responses will be presented for each system.
  • Healthcare System and Finance
    This course presents an overview of health care roles and in-patient and outpatient health care agencies.  Concepts include consumer navigation of health insurance and health care financing.  Emphasis is placed on maintain patients’ rights, facilitating patient financial responsibilities and promoting access to quality care services.
  • Community Resources and Health Promotion
    This capstone course provides an opportunity for students to apply the concepts and skills acquired in the patient navigator program.  The student will demonstrate patient navigation skills by performing a community assessment and developing a portfolio of local resources for healthcare services and health promotion.
