We are committed to helping advance the effective use of technology in education. So, to help bring GDL into your classrooms, we’re providing a detailed approach on how to integrate GDL with your current teaching practice. Your package will include:
detailed lesson plans
comprehensive assessment tools (tracking, qualitative, and quantitative)
traditional quizzes
supplemental teaching resources
coding for current Ontario curriculum
explicit links to Canadian, American & International educational standards.
Learning Through Games
The Genomics Digital Lab Learning Environment uses game theory to encourage students to learn from their mistakes and build on their successes. Because it tracks student performance through each challenge, progression through the activities helps indicate their level of understanding. The Learning Environment is flexible. Use GDL’s stunning and dynamic graphics;
To “hook” learners into a new topic
To facilitate self-directed, discovery-based learning.
To connect with harder-to-reach students
To integrate aspects of the “21st Century” skillset into your classroom, including media literacy, intellectual curiosity, problem identification, formulation, and solution skills, and self-direction skills
To effectively use technology in your classroom
As a visual aid for teacher-directed learning
To facilitate cooperative learning as students explore and problem solve together
To reinforce and master concepts at home
As a fun exam-preparation aid
GDL's Real-time Assessment
Teachers who register with a “Teachers Account” will have access to a sophisticated web-based student management tool with an integrated tracking system that reports both quantitative and qualitative feedback. Monitor student progress through the challenges or view and assess student notebooks. Have students follow the built-in sequence, or pick and choose the order of modules to match your curricular needs. And don’t forget that GDL is a web-based application, so that students and teachers can access it from anywhere.
GDL for all Ontario Teachers & Students!
Help make GDL available to all Ontario Teachers & Students! In Ontario, OSAPAC (Ontario Software Acquisition Program Advisory Committee) is responsible for the purchasing and distribution of educational software. If you are interested in Genomics Digital Lab, but rather see it adopted by the Ontario Ministry of Education (i.e., all Ontario classrooms would be able to access it for free), please fill out an OSAPAC Needs Assessment Survey. The survey can be found on the OSAPAC website and can be completed in about 5 minutes.
Step-by-step instructions to nominate the software:
Click on "welcome" (ou "bienvenue")
Click on "OSAPAC Survey" on the sidebar
Click on the link in the first box under software requirements
Fill out form, click on “proceed to software survey”
Select the grade level your interested in using this software for (it seems to work best for 7&8, 11, & 12, but could prove useful in other grades) and science.
Select “Simulation" for Software type and enter "Genomics Digital Lab: Plant Cells” for Software title.
